The Tactical Missile Launcher (TML) is an Illuminate indirect fire structure that launches guided plasma bursts. It is an independent version of the tactical missile launching function usually reserved for strategic missile silos and is the Illuminate alternative to an artillery installation. Once built the launcher will automatically fire missiles at detected enemy units.
Although the Tactical Missile Launcher is the Illuminate equivalent of artillery, it is not a replacement. It has no splash damage and less than half the range of Long Range Artillery. It can also be countered with mobile and static missile defense. Despite its flaws the Tactical Missile Launcher has the advantages of being relatively cheap to research and build, greater range than Fortified Artillery and greater accuracy and damage than Long Range Artillery. On larger maps, it can be used for forward base defense and area denial, but it is not a useful weapon for turtling.
Since the Tactical Missile Launcher can be built on water, like other Illuminate structures, it can be built in areas inaccessible to UEF and Cybran land forces. (Not on Xbox 360)
The Tactical Missiles Launcher can be a very effective offensive weapon. Especially when using the Illuminate teleport ability to get in and out before the enemy can respond. For example: an Illuminate ACU can teleport near an enemy forward base, making sure to stay outside of the enemy's defenses, and deploy a shield generator, two defensive turrets, two AA turrets, and a Tactical Missile Launcher. If done right, the ACU can teleport in, construct this set, and teleport out in about 1.5 minutes. This is an effective way to destroy an enemy forward base and add a roadblock against future attacks.
Because the Illuminate Tactical missile launcher's missiles do not track its target it will not be effective on fast moving ground units, but if you build a wall of them they can easily take down any slow moving ground experimental before it even gets close to your base, due to their long range.
