The Soul Ripper II Experimental Gunship is a Cybran major air experimental unit. Armed with a large battery of anti-ground and anti-air weapons, the Soul Ripper excels at harassing undefended portions of an opponent's base. Its appearance in the battlefield is a bad sign, and if you're not prepared, the Soul Ripper II is more than capable of dealing a lot of damage to most units and structures. The game manual states that "somewhat resembling a giant flea, the Soul Ripper II is capable of dishing out heavy damage in the matter of a few seconds."

Compared to the AC-1000 Terror

The AC-1000 is a minor experimental, whereas the Soul Ripper is a major experimental, meaning the latter has a more powerful arsenal of weapons. However, you will find that the AC-1000 is deployed to the battlefield a lot quicker and in greater numbers than the Soul Ripper, as 4 AC-1000 gunships can be built for the same price as a single Soul Ripper. Essentially, the AC-1000 shouldn't be sent alone to deal with a Soul Ripper. To a Soul Ripper, an isolated AC-1000 is nothing but a nice chunk of veterancy.

Tips[]

  • The Soul Ripper is surprisingly effective at attacking surfaced naval units.
  • The Soul Ripper has the appearance of a large, spiky, flying tick. It is one of the most frightening units in the game, and has the firepower to back up this fear.
  • Its weapons are highly effective at attacking groups of units (as they are somewhat inaccurate and deal splash damage) but will not penetrate shields well.
  • It is very good for destroying an enemy's ACU as it does high damage, and 2 or 3 of them can reasonably ignore any anti-air defenses and focus solely on destroying the ACU. Also, if they are taking too much damage, they can run away at a high pace. They can usually outrun other gunships, but not fighters.
  • Soul Rippers posses an incredibly strong AA laser cannon. This allows it to effectively deal with swarms of Wasps, for example.
  • It is incredibly effective against other gunships as all of its weapons can be used at once. However, other gunships can also target the Soul Ripper as a result.
  • In the first mission in the Cybran campaign, after the download is complete, 4 of these will attack you if you do not leave via the Quantum Gate.
  • As a last resort, the Soul Ripper's Air Crash deals a reasonably high amount of damage, and thus can be used to make a dent in an approaching army.
  • The Soul Ripper is extremely powerful, far out-damaging the AC-1000 Terror.
  • To balance its immense amount of firepower, the Soul Ripper takes large amounts of resources and time to create. To counter some of the lengthy build time, have your engineers and ACU assist the production.
  • A large group of Soul Rippers can be used to assault strategic points in an enemy base, such as nuclear facilities, artillery, etc. A cluster of ten or more gunships can EASILY take out any base in the campaign even on hard and any base in multi player that is lacking ludicrous amounts of AA defences.
  • The Soul Ripper II is surprisingly good at defending a base, as it and the base can complement each other. This can be good to know if you need time to make a large force, bring back your economy, or defend on some missions. However not recommended to actively go for, as it will take a lot of time and resources.
  • Because of the versatile nature of the Soul Ripper, and it's fair speed, it can complement almost any force decently, giving extra firepower in almost every category (save for underwater).

Comparison with SC1[]

Visual composition, armament types and attributes have changed when compared to the equivalent unit in Supreme Commander 1. Similarities in the comparison include that it still moves at a very similar pace, and is still capable of providing an effective level of combat against most units. It is less vulnerable to enemy aircraft than its SC1 counterpart.

Trivia[]

The name Soul Ripper is a fairly accurate description of what it does to your enemy and his units both physically and metaphorically.

Compared to SC2, the Broadsword gunship is a major threat to the Soul Ripper in SC1, as it is a tech 3 gunship.
